Archipelago Cinema
October 12, 2016
The Archipelago Cinema isn't the main outside skimming silver screen that is ever existed, however it's unquestionably the most flawlessly arranged.
The crowd drifts amidst a quiet tidal pond in the Strait of Malacca, inertly shaking forward and backward with the tide, while watching the flashing screen skimming coming soon before them. The individual bits of this gliding amphitheater are worked from light pockets of wood bound together with mosquito nets – a system spearheaded by nearby anglers to homestead lobsters.
German designer Ole Scheeren, who planned the setting, said he needed to make, "a feeling of transience, irregularity, practically like driftwood. Then again perhaps something more engineering: Modular pieces, approximately gathered, similar to a gathering of little islands that assemble to shape a theater."
